Ambient Textile Lighting from molo Brings Soft, Acoustic Comfort to Modern Workspaces

SHERIDAN, WYOMING - November 28, 2025 - Design studio molo is reimagining ambient lighting as both a material and a wellbeing tool, using paper-like textile lamps and sculptural luminaires to soften workspaces, public interiors and homes while improving acoustics and visual comfort.

Light as a Material for Architecture and Wellbeing

At molo, light is treated as a material in its own right, on par with wood or paper. With its ability to influence how people experience space, both natural and artificial light are central to the studio's approach. Textile lamps become architectural elements that modulate shadow, texture and colour, turning illumination into an emotional component of interior design rather than a purely functional afterthought.

The studio's sculptural lamp collection draws inspiration from traditional paper lanterns commonly seen in Scandinavian and East Asian interiors. These forms are engineered to cast soft, diffuse light that wraps a space in ambient glow instead of harsh contrast. For specifiers and workplace designers, this opens up a pathway to create interiors that feel calmer, more human and more conducive to focused work.

High-Quality LEDs to Support Mood, Focus and Circadian Rhythm

Humans and animals instinctively respond to light, even when its quality is not consciously perceived. Low-quality artificial lighting and undetectable LED flicker can undermine mood, concentration and circadian rhythm. Molo addresses this by pairing its textile pendants and lamps with high-quality, energy-efficient +90 CRI LED light sources.

These LEDs approximate the vividness of natural daylight, allowing colours and materials to be seen more accurately and reducing visual fatigue over long periods. For offices, studios and hospitality spaces, this level of colour rendering and visual clarity is increasingly seen as a baseline requirement for staff wellbeing and guest experience.

Colour Temperatures and Ambient Glow Without Glare

Molo offers its non-woven textile lamps in three specific colour temperatures, allowing designers to adapt schemes for homes, workspaces or hybrid environments. Each option is tuned to deliver a balanced ambient glow that avoids glare and hotspots, supporting calm, clarity and a stronger connection to the surrounding architecture.

In residential settings, warmer tones can create intimate atmospheres for rest and reflection, while cooler or neutral tones suit collaborative work areas and studios. Across use cases, the lamps are designed to fill a space with soft, evenly distributed light that can replace or complement traditional overhead fixtures.

Integrated Acoustic Performance Through Textile Furniture and Lamps

Sound is given the same importance as light in molo's product ecosystem. The studio's textile furniture, built around an internal honeycomb core and pleated surfaces, is engineered to absorb sound and reduce reflected noise. When used together with pendant lamps and mobiles, these elements operate as a functional acoustic system.

Suspended luminaires and mobiles act as overhead acoustic panels, especially effective in open-plan offices, playrooms, public spaces and other high-traffic areas where buffers are needed. Both pendant and mobile versions of cloud softlight have a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.45, absorbing 45% of the sound energy in a space. This helps improve speech intelligibility and creates a clearer, calmer environment for meetings, deep work or customer interaction.

Paper-Like Durability: White HDPE Textile for Long-Term Use

Although the lamps evoke the delicacy of paper, they are crafted from recyclable, non-woven polyethylene (HDPE) in a translucent white shade. White is a deliberate choice, reflecting and diffusing light to achieve a quiet luminosity that fills the room without glare.

The textile material is tear- and water-resistant, dust-repellent and anti-static, preventing visible build-up and keeping the luminaires looking clean over time. It can be gently dusted, vacuumed or wiped with mild soap and water when needed. For facilities managers and operators, this durability and ease of maintenance are key advantages over traditional paper lanterns or more fragile decorative fixtures.

Sculptural Product Family: cloud softlight and urchin softlight

Within the collection, cloud softlight pendant and cloud softlight mobile create canopies of soft, luminous forms that float overhead like a sculptural skyscape. When grouped, they define zones and provide a sense of intimate enclosure, ideal for collaborative areas, lounges or reception spaces. Cloud mast extends this concept into a floor-supported luminaire, with a counterweighted boom that allows the mobile to rise and fall gently with air currents, adding a dynamic, biophilic quality to interiors.

Urchin softlight adds a tactile, interactive dimension. This sculptural lamp can be expanded and reshaped by hand, its forms recalling sea creatures and traditional Japanese lanterns. Small adjustments in shape subtly shift light intensity and mood, inviting users to engage with the luminaire directly and creating a more personalised lighting experience.

By combining ambient, paper-like lighting with acoustic control and long-lasting materials, molo's textile lamps give architects, interior designers and operators a flexible toolkit for creating spaces that are not only functional, but expressive, restorative and alive to changing needs throughout the day.
